FERO is a fermentation vessel for making products such as kimchi, sauerkraut or miso paste. It is produced in a slip-casting process with a custom developed clay mass that aims at creating a microporeous surface after the firing process. It mimics the unique properties of traditional Korean Onggi vessels, that date back thousands of years and are usually handmade on a potters wheel by master craftsmen.
My approach was to create a fermentation vessel with similar properties that could be more easily produced in a slip-casting process. I started a long process to develop my own clay slip with the desired properties based on a local clay from the Burgenland. The mass contains a lot of organic and rough particles, creating a microporeous surface after the firing process.
